Quick Savings Tip: Safe and Effective Household Cleaners

July 23, 2008 · Filed Under Green, Quick Saving Tips

With all the cleaning products available, how do you know which ones to use in your household. There are many people that have small children that should not be exposed to harmful cleaners, especially at such a young age. There are other solutions than buying harmful cleaning products. Make you own.

With the use of lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar, water and many other basic ingredients around the house, you can make a number of different cleaners that will solve many of your household cleaning problems. I have heard of using vinegar to clean windows, but I never knew there were so many practical and safe cleaners that can be made at home. Why go out and spend a fortune on different cleaning products when you can make them at home with common products you can find in your home that are inexpensive. One common mixture involves including baking soda with water to form a paste that not only is extremely safe, but is highly effective on many surfaces.

There are too many to list here so check out the entire list of environmentally safe household cleaners. I am going to try some of these to replace some of the cleaners that I have in my house. Please share your experience with any these safe household cleaners.

Making your own products is definitely the way to go if you have the time or patience. One of the reasons we don’t see homemade type products on the shelves is probably because they’re not very shelf stable. The ones that contain lemon juice might actually start to smell bad after a time.

I recently wrote an article that helps to cut through some of the labeling jargon on commercially sold cleaning products. If you’ve got to buy something off the shelf, there’s a lot to know.

I think any homemade housecleaning products are great…They cut back on expenses and also are environmentally friendly and don’t waste product packaging. However, I do agree with the other comment on shelf life and suggest researching this. They provide a guide link, and I can also do the same to help anyone else. I wrote an ebook through all of my research regarding household cleaners (among other environmentally friendly things people and businesses can do). You can check it out here:

A safe, really cheap cleaning product that you can find at any grocery store is Bon Ami. It comes in powder form, in a golden canister (like those cans of Comet). It is one of those products that is really old and works really well without chemicals. Plus it is about 90 cents per can.

I’ve used Bon Ami and it’s a great product. I was also thinking of trying the mixture of baking soda and water to see how that compares. The biggest concern I have is that it will not clean as well as a product like Bon Ami.

Great Article! I couldn’t click through that link for the list of green cleaning ingredients…I use almost exclusively white vinegar, baking soda, etc. And I love it! I am totally sold on making most of my own natural cleaners and I notice a huge difference…like no harsh fumes!
