November 3, 2008 · Filed Under Green, Technology

Green Car Journal announced its list for the top 5 greenest cars for the upcoming 2009 year car models. These 5 cars were identified by the editors of the magazines as the top green autos to be available on the market. The cars are (in alphabetical order):

  • BMW 335d
  • Ford Fusion Hybrid
  • Saturn Vue 2 Mode Hybrid
  • smart fortwo
  • Volkswagen Jetta TDI

Each of these cars gets great gas mileage, but are these really the greenest cars available on the market?

The Real Green Autos

The only car that I feel out of the 5 that is truly green is the smart fortwo. It gets great gas mileage and is not a hybrid. Europeans has been driving around these cars for years and for good reason. Even though it is only a two seater, it is more efficient and can fit into extremely tight spots making it especially useful in the city. It is also the most affordable car for the great gas mileage you get. They currently also have a hybrid out in Europe and it gets up to 20% more fuel efficiency than the original model and it soon could come to America.

I still think there are greener cars available that are not even mentioned on the list. The Aptera is a much more efficient hybrid that can get 120 miles to the gallon or even higher depending on how far you drive. That is more than 3 times the mpg as compared to the supposed top green autos and is in the same price range as well. There is also the Tesla that is a full electric car. As long as the electricity comes from renewable resources like wind or solar energy, electric cars leave little or no carbon imprint.

If you currently own one of the top 5 green cars, please share your experience. Also, how do you feel about the top 5 picks and what would your top 5 list be?

Yes, we do need such cars to keep up our environment. I just read an article in Yahoo about a car manufacturer coming with air as the fuel, wow…

Interesting picks, but I’d like to see a more comprehensive Top 25 with a green rating number. If this were published each year, with prior year ranking, it would paint an interesting picture of how cars move up or down the list as new technology is introduced.

Personally, I have never been too fond of the Smart Car. I talked to someone that owned one and he said he was only getting around 40 mpg.

Personally when you take in its small size and the size of all the big cars you are likely to run into in America, it really doesn’t seem worth it. Especially when you can get a Honda that runs fairly efficiently and is much larger and safer.

Perhaps he had a first generation one though, so they might have improved.

tone health: Really cool article and that is neat that a car can run off of air.

Global Patriot: I agree completely with you. I wish they would have shown a more comprehensive list with more rankings and a wider array of cars. I also wish they would show cars from lesser known manufacturers instead of just picking the major ones .

Tiger: Good points. I don’t actually know anybody who ones one, but I have been inside of one at the dealership. They are pretty small and would probably not hold up too much if a huge SUV hit one. They do have a larger model call the fourtwo that could be a more viable option.

Sorry about the commentluv problems. I have fixed it as you can see with Tiger’s post.

I think we are going to see these green cars explode in the next few years. Gas is going up and down in price, not to mention the amount of toxins produced by burning fossil fuels!
