History

Otterbottle Brand

After years of seeing landfills being overrun with plastic water bottles, Shannon Andrukow decided to develop an alternative. Using her passion for the environment as well as sense of style, the Otterbottle stainless steel bottle series was born in 2007 in Calgary, Canada. Her goal is to develop a stylish set of environmentally friendly stainless steel water bottles and at the same time not be harmful to drink from. Plastic water bottles, in particular Nalgene, contain harmful Bisphenol A (BPA) that is a hormone blocker. It can be extremely harmful to our health and has been connected to causing hormonal problems and even diffeerent types of cancer.

Why Buy?

Some of the really nice features of Otterbotle’s include:

  • Stainless Steel: Made of high grade, quality 18/8 stainless steel and are BPA-free.
  • Stylish Designs: They carry almost 20 designs to choose from. All paint is tested for lead to ensure bottles are completely safe.
  • Lid: Each bottles comes with two lids, a sports sipper lid and a twist lid that are held together with a carabiner clip.
  • Variety of Sizes: Comes in three sizes, 500ml, 750ml and 900ml.
  • Donations: On top of building a quality bottle, they also donate a portion of their proceeds to the David Suzuki Foundation.

The thing that really sets Otterbottle apart is their style. They have designed a type of bottle for just about anybody.

David Suzuki Foundation

The David Suzuki foundation has been around for almost 20 years. The organizations goal is to find ways for our society to live more naturally with our environment and become a more sustainable society. There are four areas that this foundation focuses on: oceans and sustainable fishing, climate change and clean energy, sustainability, and the Nature Challenge. They seek out scientists, researchers and and the business world to help research a way that our economy can stay competitive while living in sync with nature.

Testing it Out

I actually have had the pleasure of owning an Otterbottle and have nothing but great things to say about it. The stainless steel it is made from is top quality. I have dropped it at least once already and I have yet to see a dent on it. It also has no aftertaste like plastic water bottles typically do. Cleaning has been really easy as all I do is wash it down with some soap and water or throw it in the dishwasher. I would highly recommend this water bottle to any of my Canadian readers.

Where to Buy

The Otterbottle is currently only sold in Canada and on several Canadian retail and online stores including their own store.

  1. Thanks for the introduction to Otterbottle. I’ve also had good luck with my Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottle, which is available in the US.

Klean Kanteen actually produces similar bottles. The biggest difference is are the designs on the Otterbottles. I like them better than the plain colored Klean Kanteen bottles.

  2. oops!! a typo “2o years”, change to “20 years”.

This is worth buying, plastic are no good to environment.

Good catch. I didn’t even notice. You are indeed correct though, plastic is no good for the environment and tasted bad. Steel is the way to go.

  3. They are just beautiful! I hope they’ll be selling to US markets soon!

    Thanks for sharing this resource!!

BTW … hope you’ll be celebrating Earth Hour 2009. :)

  4. Hi all. The FOF Bottle Company is proud to offer our FOF bottles as a clean reusable alternative to the single use plastic bottles. FOF (pronounced how it’s spelled) is an acronym for “For Our Future … For Our Family … For Our Friends.”

All FOF bottles are made of high-quality, food grade #304 (18/8) stainless steel. It’s that simple; they’re completely BPA-free, won’t leach any scary chemicals or toxins and don’t require any type of special inside lining like some other bottles. All caps are made of food grade polypropylene which also are completely BPA-free. Our FOF bottles are also independently FDA certified (not too many companies go to that extreme).

All FOF bottles come in single-wall 550 ml or 750 ml capacity in either a brushed stainless or bright (mirror-like) polished finished. They are 100% recyclable, dishwasher friendly, eco-friendly and, quite simply, one of the classiest designs on the market today.

They’re designed with a large bottleneck opening for 2 reasons:
    • to accommodate large ice cubes or smoothies, and
    • for easy cleaning to prevent any type of bacteria build-up.
Small-mouth bottleneck designs can’t give you either of these.

FOF bottles are indeed an essential ingredient “For Our Future … For Our Family … For Our Friends”. Please visit us on-line at http://fofbottles.com to learn more or e-mail for more details. Thanks

Aquasana makes a similarly priced stainless bottle available at: http://www.ambrosiawaterfilters.com/aqua-canteen-stainless-steel-bottles.html

  5. So it appears that all bottles are NOT created equal. There’s been an unfortunate incident that’s happened to one of the leading aluminum bottle companies. Since our bottles are pure stainless steel, we’ve been asked to comment on the incident a number of times.

When these aluminum bottles first came out, there were questions about what exactly is in the liners of aluminum bottles. With stainless steel like FOF Bottles, there is no need for the liner, so no worries about the presence of BPA.

Google SIGG bpa problems to read about the recent news and then look us up for affordable pure stainless steel food grade #304 (18/8) water bottles.

    Thanks.

My favorite after using many brands remains to be the Klean Kanteen. I like the range of bright colors and plain style. All I need to do is to paste stickers and have my own customise ONE OF A KIND design.

I have just moved to Singapore and am really pleased to find an online shop selling the full range of Klean Kanteen bottles and accessories.

Just bought everything that I need and the service is perfect. I do recommend you to this shop if you are in Singapore or in the neiighbouring countries:

All caps are interchangeable; including our new Advent sippy spout adaptor cap. Please visit us on-line at http://www.fofbottles.com

    Thanks!
