Wind Turbines Noise Not Dangerous
One of the biggest complaints against using wind turbines as a source of alternative energy is the fact that they could possibly be detrimental to our health. What has been termed as wind turbine syndrome, it believed by many that wind turbines could affect our hearing. The American Wind Energy Association released a report earlier this month that there is no evidence to show that wind turbines have a negative effect on our health.
There is no evidence that the sounds, nor the sub-audible vibrations, emitted by wind turbines have any direct physiological effects on humans.
The above quote by Dr. Robert McCunney, one of the co-authors of the study really goes against the who theory of the wind turbine syndrome. It is believed that the noise generated from wind turbines is equivalent to what you would normally experience in an average city.
There are always going to be some that may be annoyed by the noises generated from wind turbines or even have some symptoms they may feel are connected to wind turbines running. This does not mean that we should not continue to build on this great source of energy that has unlimited potential in our future energy portfolio. It’s great that this study was done by real doctors and scientists to combat those who are fighting hard against the growth of wind energy and its introduction in our local communities.

I’m interested in looking into wind turbines as an alternative energy resource as I’ve never really considered it before.
“wind turbines have a negative effect on our health”, sounds like the ramblings of a government who do not want to push for green energy.
I agree that wind turbines are one of the energy sources of tomorrow. This technology definitely needs to expand so that it is used on a more widespread basis. One of our local ski hills recently installed a wind turbine to fulfill its energy needs.
Wind turbines is really good energy source for future. Thanks for information about it.
I’ve never understood why wave power has been ignored in favour of wind power. In the long term this will be seen as folly.
This is great to know, the more barriers that are broken to help the Green fight, the better
Now lets dispel a few more myths
Till then,
Jean
Wind and water power are the future for sure! I’ve never been near one close enough to hear it, but I would think that steady kind of noise is something people could assimilate to and ignore over time, like living beneath an airport route or near train tracks.
Great article!
Here are a few myths to also keep “upwind” of:
There were also false claims that wind turbines gave cows seizures and the turbines would consequently have the same effect on people. There is also a youtube video of a wind turbine falling apart. Some groups manipulated this video and made claims about the imminent threat of wind turbines collapsing. The video was actually a test done in Texas by a large turbine manufacturing company to understand the potential impact. To date, this incident has not occurred.
If you are looking for additional information outside of the wind energy trade associations like AWEA, check out Windustry, a non-profit that provides information about wind energy, community wind energy, and small turbines: http://www.windustry.org/.
As for the wave technology, I can’t wait for it to grow exponentially. There are more municipalities experimenting with wave technology to diversify their ‘energy portfolios’, which is a good indicator of what is to come. I hope the two forms of renewable energy can support one another in their growth and get more clout for funding and public support together.
