HGTV Green Home Giveaway 2010
GTV’s Green Home Giveaway is back once again. Located nearby Plymouth, Massachusetts in Pinehills, this home was built using green build standards and contains all the eco-friendly features anybody would want.

The total prize package is worth over $800,000 and includes this beautiful eco-friendly cottage, $100,000 cash and an hybrid truck. You can enter once daily on their site through June 4, 2010.
Now that we know what giveaway is for, let’s take a look at how the home looks and some of the home’s great features:
The house features a huge kitchen, lots of red, beautiful furniture, a large outdoor area and over 2,000 sq. ft. Those are great things to have in a home, but I’m more interested in all the “Green” features of the home. After all, that’s why it’s called HGTV’s Green Home.
Ignoring all the shameless promotions for the massive truck, there really are some great green features in the home. So much so that the home received the National Association of Home Builders Gold certification, there second highest award. Of the total 813 buildings in America that received awards from this organization, about 200 homes have received this award and this is only the second in the state of Massachusetts.
Here is list of all the details that help get this home the gold certification ordered by room.
Living Room
The living room features large windows that allow tons of light into the room. Energy bills will be reduced with all the natural lighting entering in the house during the day. To keep the homeowners warm during the winter, there is a stone fireplace made from reclaimed fieldstone. Side and accent tables are made from natural reclaimed wood from fallen trees.

Kitchen
The countertops are made from sustainable natural quartz countertops from CaesarStone, which is made from recycled raw materials and is GreenGuard certified. All of the appliances are GE Profile Energy Star-rated appliances. To ligtht the space, LED recessed lighting is used that allows for an approximately 75% energy savings over traditional incandescent lighting.

Dining Room
The dining table is the most impressive part of this space. It was created from old wood and mateirals that were salvaged from various sources. There also features a branch sculpture that was crafted locally to divide the dining room from the living room.

Bathrooms
The master bathroom features CaesarStone countertops that are just as eco-friendly, but provide a different look for the bathroom. Low-flow shower heads are featured in both bathrooms. Water is heated through an Energy Star qualified condensing gas boiler. These systems are ultra thermal efficient that are slightly more expensive upfront, the cost can be recouped in 2-3 years.

Bedrooms
The master bedroom features a bed made from old doors that were purchased from Habitat from Humanity. On top of that bed is an eco-friendly mattress topped with green bedding. Paper-mache lamps are featured in both rooms that were covered with low-VOC paint as well as handmade lamps made from recycled materials.

In the kids room, eco-friendly wood toys for indoor and outdoor use give the kids hours of entertainment. Even the carpeting used in each room is made from a portion of post consumer recycled content.

Exterior
Starting with the site of the home, here is a video that describes how they cleared the lot responsibly:
On top of the tower room in the home, as set of solar panels to help and Energy Star-rate shingles.. Wood trimming around the home comes from wood that was grown in sustainable forest. The chimney is made from the same reclaimed fieldstone as the fireplace in the dining room. Large trees were transplanted from other development sites to provide the trees a new home. The windows on the home are Andersons’ most energy efficient model that also keep out harmful UV rays. Also featured is an efficient water irrigation system and a rain barrel.

Community
One of the big draws for the planners of this home was the community atmosphere of Pinehills. The community was built on tryint to preserve as much natural environment as possible. Pinehills contains all the features anybody could want including wooded lots, walking and nature trails, a swimming pool, golf courses, shopping and health/fitness facilities. The great part is that all of this is within walking distance from the home.
Good luck and hopefully you are the next winner of HGTV’s Green Home Giveaway!

What a beautiful “HOME”. So many deserving people need a decent place to live. I would be so proud to call it my home. It would be such a blessing. I to agree this type of arrangement is needed more. We as a country are struggling to make it every day. Just knowing someone will be given this chance gives me hope that something will happen to make my life better. Everyone has a story, we all need a clean safe place to lay our heads at nights. Thank you to all that are involved it must be rewarding to be a part of such a good thing. Good Luck to All of Us!!!!!

My husband and I were married July 8, 1967. The year before my husband lost his oldest brother brother in a diving accident and 6 months latter lost his one and only other sibling due to a car accident. The folling April after were married we lost his Dad. It was a rockey start. Now it seems history has again repeated itself. February 2008 our oldest child our son collapeds at work and we lost him that night. The following March 2009 I also lost my husband. I think a new change would help my two daughters, daughter in law and grandchildren if we were lucky enough to win.
This is a beautiful home and being originally from the east coast I would love the opportunity to return there to be with family and relatives. My life in the Western states has taken a drastic turn after loosing my job in 2009, the loss of my mother, my brother and my mother-in-law, all within 8 months. Life deals us a bad hand sometimes, but with God’s help we can still make it. Blessings to whoever wins.
Thanks for reading and good luck to all of us.
BEAUTIFUL HOME. EVERYBODY HAS A STORY TO TELL ON HOW THEY NEED THIS HOME MOST. THE TRUTH IS EVERYONE IS STRUGGLING AND USUALLY THE ONES THAT ARE’NT ARE THE ONES THAT WIN.
I have been praying that this dream would come true for my two children and I. I am curretly divorced due to domestic violence. I have a 9 year old and a 14 year old. I struggle every day trying to put food on the table and pay my rent. I almost got evicted last year, but God is good. I just got laid-off from my job this month. Who ever wins this I pray that it’s someone who really needs it. I know there’s people out there who’s going through worst then I am. God bless.
One word to describe the color and design (especially the green room with red floor) “UNIQUE”
