If the BP Oil Spill Happened Where I Live …

One of the scariest things about the BP oil spill in the Gulf is that, with deep-water drilling happening virtually all over the world, it is no longer inconceivable that a disaster of this magnitude could happen just about anywhere.

And if you have a difficult time imagining what the BP oil spill would look like in your neck of the woods, the creators of the website If It Was My Home have created a clever means of illustration.  Simply enter your zip code into the search box and click “Move the Spill,” and you will immediately see what the BP oil spill would look like if it happened in your hometown.

I am not sure that I remotely understand the impact of the disaster in the Gulf – even after seeing that the spill appears to be over 100 times the size of New York City – but If It Was My Home also provides a list of things that we can do to help.

  1. We need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil for stability but also reduce our dependence on domestic oil for the environment, that our children will inherit.
I have written several blogs, posts, comments, on just this point and I ran across your blog in my search for others. I have even started a small business delivering green energy to the residents of MD. Check out the website, I would love to discuss some posts for your blog concerning this.

  2. That was terrible…God bless everyone who are staying within the area.

  3. If they’re expecting landfall in Florida today or tomorrow (as I read) then this map under-reports the size of the spill by at least 50 percent.

  4. @Escort Service: It reached Florida a long time ago. That map does not show the entire area that the oil spill spread to. Still it is quite disgusting to think of all that oil winding up in the ocean. It’s sure to have long lasting consequences.

  5. Wow that is such a huge area of oil spillage, it would suck if it happened where I live.

  6. The whole oil spill disaster was really devastating, I have a sister who is currently located in Texas, and the beaches there were effected by the oil spill :( Sad to see the event happen really.

    Till then,

    Jean

  7. Hope everyone tried out the tool to calculate the oil spill if it happened where they lived. The above picture is of New York, I believe, and demonstrates the spill’s impact there, hence a bit of the confusion.

Let’s all hope that innovative solutions and round the clock efforts will help salvage and restore the Gulf and the places many people and species call home.
