Autism Could be Linked to Environment?

January 12, 2009 · Filed Under Health, News

Autism is a mysterious disease that has dramatically increased in recent years and only speculations as to why.  A new study conduced by the UC Davis Department of Public Health Sciences reports that the increase of Autism cases cannot fully explained by changes in doctor’s diagnosis.  Many feel that this is the main reason that Autism cases have increase so much in the past 20 years, but this study seems to show differently.  The scientists involved in this study feel that more research needs to be done in environmental factors that could affect babies and fetuses including:

  • Pesticides
  • Viruses
  • Chemicals in household products

The exact results of the study were that less than half of the increase is due to the change in diagnosis of the disease.  The only two factors that could cause such a huge change are genetic and environmental.  Genetics are out of the picture since they could not change that much in such a short period.  This leads the scientists to believe that it must be environmental factors causing the increase.

This is a very interesting issue that hits home to many people.  The current rate of an autistic child being born is anywhere from 1 – 6 children out of 1000.  That is a pretty scary number considering that it is also continually rising.  I have heard many people blaming the rise on vaccinations.  I am not sure if this is actually the case, but I can easily believe that environmental factors could be a huge reason for the increase.  All the chemicals and pesticides in the foods we eat could easily be the reason.  Also, there are tons of chemicals in our household cleaning products that could also be contributing.

Regardless of the fact that little research has been done to prove that environmental factors could be causing autism, I would take every precaution necessary. Some way that you may want to try that could reduce risks to your child while pregnant are:

Are We Eating Too Much Meat?

January 9, 2009 · Filed Under Environment, Health

The staple American foods has become meat. Not only can too much meat be bad for you, but it also has a major negative impact on the environment.

The Big Discrepancy

I always find it funny that when I am watching shows where the host travels to other countries, they are always eating tons of fresh fruits and vegetables and only eating small amounts of meat. Depending on how rural the area is, meat is usually a scarcity, but fruits and vegetables always seem to be plentiful. In America, it seems to be the complete opposite. Somehow meat is inexpensive and often the only food found in our meals, whereas fresh and inexpensive produce is extremely hard to find. It seems like such a normal things to many Americans, but if you think about it, it just doesn’t make much sense. Animals take years to grow to a point where they can killed. On the other hand, vegetables take a few months to grow and continue to reap produce for the remainder of the growing season.

Meat and Greenhouse Gases

Eating less meat does not seem like it should have a huge impact on the environment, but it does. Between the fertilizers for the animals crops, gases emitted by the livestock and transportation to markets cause tons of greenhouse gases. You would think that the most damaging part is the transportation, but it is in fact not the case. What is a huge surprise is that most of the greenhouse gases caused from producing meats and not transportation. The majority come from methane gases emitted by animals such as cows and fertilizers. Methane gases are actually much more dangerous for the environment than carbon dioxide.

The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has estimated that meat production accounts for nearly a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions.

That is one scary statistic and much of it is caused by the how dangerous methane gases produced by cows is on our environment.

Eat Less Meat

This trend we are on as a country is just not healthy. Don’t get me wrong, I am a meat eater and am by no means telling you to cut it out of your diet. A great suggestion by Dr Rajendra Pachauri is to not eat meat one day a week. Doesn’t seem too hard, but it probably is much harder than most people think. Almost everything we eat has meat it in. Instead of that meat burger you could substitute in a veggie patty. There are also other great substitutes including tofu and bean curd. If you still can’t find ways to cut meat out of your diet, you can always just eat more poultry and fish. They are far better for you health than red meats and less harmful for the environment.

How do you feel about the effects meat production are having on your diet and the environment and do you plan on cutting back any?

Shower Water and Energy Use Calculator

January 6, 2009 · Filed Under Tools

( Updated 1/20/09 ) After making the various calculations for the Shower Saving Tips article, I realized that it would be helpful to have a water calculator that would not only calculate the amount of water used, but also energy. This calculator takes in various sets of inputs including:

Water Parameters

  • Average Shower Time: Enter the amount of time you normally shower.
  • Shower Head Water Usage: The number of gallons per minute your shower head uses. If you cannot find this value, many shower heads made today use 2.5 gallons per minute.
  • Cost: The cost of water per 1000 gallons used. The national average is $2 per 1000 gallons.

Water Heater Parameters

  • Energy Type: The type of energy you water heater uses. The typical water heater uses either gas or electric.
  • Cost: The cost of one unit of the particular energy type your water heater uses. You can select the state you live in to get the average energy cost for the particular energy type your water heater uses.
  • Efficiency: Is measured as an Energy Factor (EF), which is usually listed beside the EnergyGuide label. The higher the number, the more energy efficient the water heater. On average, an electric heater has an efficiency rating of .92 while a natural gas heater has a rating of .59.
  • Water Temperature: The temperature of the ground water before being heated.
  • Shower Temperature: The temperature at which the shower water is raised to. A temperature about 125 – 130 °F can be dangerous for use.

Hopefully this calculator helps you determine how much a shower really costs you and the amount you can save by reducing your shower time. Please share your findings with this calculator.

Proximity Hotel: Greenest Hotel in America

January 5, 2009 · Filed Under Green

If you are ever need to stay in Greensboro, North Carolina and want to stay at one of the greenest hotels in the country, you are in luck. The Proximity Hotel is locally-owned and recognized by U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System as the greenest hotel in the country. This 4 star hotel was built to be more sustainable, while still be a world-class hotel and restaurant.

Proximity Hotel

What is LEED?

The U.S. Green Building Council organizes the LEED certification program that is a nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings throughout America. It also provides building owners the necessary tools to make their buildings more sustainable. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health:

  • Sustainable site development
  • Water savings
  • Energy efficiency
  • Materials selection
  • Indoor environmental quality

What makes the Proximity Hotel so green?

The USGBC recently gave the Proximity Hotel it’s LEED Platinum award, it’s highest award to green buildings throughout America. This is the first platinum award given to a building within the hospitality industry in America. There is a huge list of sustainable practices that earned this hotel the LEED top award, but top few include:

  • It uses 40% less energy and 30% less water than comparable hotels.
  • 100 solar panels covering the 4,000 square feet of rooftop that heats 60% of the hotel’s water.
  • Regional vendors and artists were used for furniture and artwork.
  • Made using many recycled building materials, sustainable woods and salvaged wood.
  • A green, vegetated rooftop will be planted on the restaurant.

It’s crazy how many sustainable methods the owners of this hotel used to build this hotel. A cool feature of this hotel is the solar panels that are lined on its rooftop. Not only do they look cool, but they utilize a normally unused space on many buildings. On top of that, it probably saves the hotel tons of money every year in heating costs.

Rooftop Solar Panels

On top of the hotel being green, its restaurant, the Print Works Bistro, has gone above and beyond in terms of sustainability. They provide local foods in many of their dishes, use geothermal energy to power their refrigeration system and use salvaged wood on their tabletops.

Quality and Green?

Just because this is considered to be the greenest hotel in America doesn’t mean it can’t be a world-class hotel with the luxurious look and feel of a 4-star hotel. They provide all the top amenities many top-tier hotels offer including high quality mattress and sheets, LCD TV, local art and are an entirely smoke-free hotel. I have been to a few 4-star hotels and they don’t look as nice this one.

I often check TripAdvisor to get a good idea of how nice a hotel is before choosing it.  The Proximity Hotel received 4 1/2 stars out of 5. They are also ranked one of the top hotels in Greensboro in terms of popularity. The price tag to stay at this hotel is fairly expensive at approximately $225 a night, but is the ordinary the price you are going to pay for a 4 star hotel. This hotel is a great example of how a beautiful hotel and restaurant like this one can leave a smaller footprint by using more sustainable methods and still charge a comparable price. Imagine the environmental impact if hotels across the country began using sustainable methods.

Tennessee Coal Plant Toxic Spill

January 2, 2009 · Filed Under Environment, News

An Eastern Tennessee Coal Plant has maintained a total of 2.2 million pounds of toxic coal ash in a holding pond within their facilities.  The Kingston Fossil Plant, owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority, had a breakage in the holding pond and caused massive flooding of surrounding areas with the toxic chemicals, many of which could cause various health problems including cancer. Officials from the plant have said that the sludge released are not toxic, but have also released a joint statement with the EPA for all people and animals to avoid any contact with it. This seems like total crap and a spill like this is just inexcusable.

At the request of the New York Times, the   Tennessee Valley Authority released the byproducts of their plant:

The plant’s byproducts included 45,000 pounds of arsenic, 49,000 pounds of lead, 1.4 million pounds of barium, 91,000 pounds of chromium and 140,000 pounds of manganese.

Those are some scary metals and are all linked to causing serious health conditions if exposed to.  Who knows that long-term impact of a massive spill like this to the residents in the local community as well as surrounding areas. What’s worse is that authorities from the plant have been slow to inform the local residents of the spill and the dangers it could cause.

This is just another example of wealthy individuals who own these types of plants who care more about making money than the safety of the public or the environment.  A formal investigation is going to be done on the spill and how to prevent further incidents like this from happening.  Is this really enough though?  A plant that allows a holding facility of toxic sludge to break should no longer be in business.  This is also just another wake up call to people that coal and other dirty sources of energy need to be eliminated in our country.  The danger their byproducts pose are not worth the slightly smaller price tag they have.
